The Young Geographer of the Year is the Royal Geography Society’s annual competition that encourages thoughtful and creative answers to the competition’s theme which is set each year. This year’s competition asked young people to create their own blueprint for the future. Here at the Two Counties Trust, all 9 schools in the Trust promoted the competition looking for innovative ideas to address problems in areas such as food production and supply, energy and sustainability, water security, biodiversity and more. Winners were selected from across the Trust in 2 age groups Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Whilst credit must go to all the entries that really highlighted the creativity and environmental awareness of students across the Trust the winners this year, both from Selston High School, really excelled considering issues such as air pollution, the importance of seagrass, transport pollution and food waste. Pictured below are the Selston winners with Selston High School’s Geography subject leader Ms Jasmin Oxlade receiving their certificates from Mr Gordon Carrothers the Two Counties Trust Geography Lead.
Discussing the competition after receiving their awards the Selston Students commented how ‘the competition had really inspired them’ to raise awareness of the issues facing our planet and ‘Try to reverse the havoc we are currently experiencing’
