Selston High School, part of The Two Counties Trust, marked Remembrance Day with activities dedicated to honouring local community members who served in past conflicts.

In preparation for the day, students created hand-drawn poppies, each bearing the name of a fallen Selston resident gathered from the village’s memorial. These poppies were combined into a wreath, a powerful symbol of remembrance crafted by students and staff.

Students were also invited to write original poems inspired by the theme of war, with the top entries all coming from Year 7. These young poets joined representatives from the Scouts, Guides and Cadet groups for a commemorative ceremony at the Selston village memorial, accompanied by Headteacher David Broomhead and staff.

After observing a two-minute silence, the students laid the school’s wreath at the memorial. The three selected poems were read aloud by their authors, followed by a recitation of The Soldier by Rupert Brooke. The event demonstrated students’ respect and commitment to honouring their local community’s history.

At school, students and staff joined together for a two-minute silence, a cherished tradition that unites the school community in reflection and remembrance.

Speaking on the day Headteacher, David Broomhead said:

“I am incredibly proud of our students across the school today for the respect they have shown today in remembering those who have fallen in conflict. It was a privilege to accompany a group of our students into the heart of Selston today as they showcased to the local community exactly what it means to be a Selston student.”

Dom, a Year 10 student and member of Mansfield Sea Cadets said:

“I was proud to be a part of today because I represent the Men and Women who gave their lives so that we could be here today.”

Daisy a Year 7 students and one of the winners of the Poetry competition also spoke on the day:

“I understand the significance of Remembrance Day because we all need to know how many people risked their lives for what we have today and we appreciate the people who fought for freedom.”
