Students across Selston High School have been spending time on their return from half term in preparation for Remembrance Day.

In preparation for the annual visit to the local memorial, Year 7 students spent time in lessons creating a paper wreath, meaning that students had a personal connection to the item that was laid at the memorial. As part of the English curriculum, students also crafted poems using the poppy as the inspiration for their poems.

On the morning of Tuesday 11th November, a group of students and staff made their way over to the Selston war memorial to spend a moments reflection on the sacrifices made by previous generations. The students in attendance brought with them their poems created in school and delivered them over the memorial. After observing a moment of silence, both the paper wreath created by Year 7s and a more traditional poppy wreath was laid at the memorial.

One of the poems read at the service was written by Ruby in Year 7:

Upon the field where silence lies, beneath the wide endless skies. A sea of red fields wide, remembering those who fought for us.

Their petals flame, yet fall so light, a symbol born from grief and fight, they bow, they bend, but still they stand. Like whispers from another land.

Through summer winds, through autumn rain. They bloom with beauty touched by pain. In their glow, we pause, we stand in memory.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

As well as the laying of wreaths, the whole school also observed a two minute silence at 11am.
